A bettor made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro just before it was made public, sparking debate about whether someone profited from non-public details of American actions.

Market Movement in Predictions

Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the month's conclusion surged in the time leading up to former President Trump declared on the weekend that the president had been seized.

One account, which joined the platform last month and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436,000 from a starting bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Market statistics shows that users assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the midday period of the prior Friday.

But the odds had climbed to eleven percent by the end of the day and surged in the early hours of Saturday, suggesting a sharp shift in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a bet based on confidential knowledge," commented a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other individuals also profited large payouts from similar wagers.

Political Attention Intensifies

Politicians are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation presented on Monday would prevent public officials from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with traders able to predict everything from sports outcomes to politics.

Prediction markets were examined under the previous administration. Yet it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
