Federal Government Ready to Send Scores Federal Agents to the Bay Area

The Trump administration appeared poised on Wednesday to deploy numerous of government officers to the northern California for a major border security initiative, prompting condemnation from California leaders.

Specifics of the Mission

Information of the operation were still emerging, but it will allegedly feature over a hundred government officers, as reported. The officers are expected to begin using the Coast Guard facility in Alameda, opposite San Francisco. It was not confirmed whether military personnel would join the operation.

Official Response

The mission comes after weeks of threats by the president to focus on the progressive municipality. The state's leader Gavin Newsom condemned the action, calling it “right out of the dictator’s handbook”.

“He sends out covered agents, he sends out Border Patrol, he deploys immigration officials, he generates concern and apprehension in the community so that he can claim credit for handling that by sending in the military forces,” Newsom said. “This mirrors the arsonist fighting the fire.”

City Planning

San Francisco is the newest major city focused on by Donald Trump’s campaign of large-scale detentions. The operation is expected to trigger a standoff between the administration and municipal authorities who have pledged to prevent paramilitary operations in the city.

San Franciscans have been preparing for an extended period for Trump to fulfill repeated threats to send troops to the city. At a Wednesday afternoon press conference, San Francisco’s city leader stated again that the city was prepared.

“For months, we have been preparing for the possibility of some kind of federal deployment in our city,” declared the leader, noting that he had implemented additional measures on Wednesday to “strengthen the city’s support for our newcomer populations, and make certain our agencies are coordinated prior to any government operation.”

Constitutional Framework

In spite of judicial disputes to missions in a multiple urban areas, including Chicago, Portland and Los Angeles, Trump has claimed “unquestioned power” to dispatch the state troops in cities, referencing the federal statute which allows presidents limited power to dispatch personnel on domestic land.

Community Reaction

Newsom – who once held office as San Francisco’s city leader – had pledged to step in “right away” to a deployment in the city. “The concept that the national administration can dispatch personnel into our cities with no legitimate cause grounded in reality, no oversight, no responsibility, no consideration of state sovereignty – it represents an infringement on the rule of law,” he said on Wednesday.

Community groups, including civil rights groups created during the initial federal leadership, have organized to rapidly assemble a mass rally in the city, as well as candlelight gatherings at public spaces.

Local Effect

In San Francisco’s Mission district, a predominantly Latino community, elected official informed journalists last week she and her voters had been preparing for this situation. “The time that employees avoid workplaces, when anyone Black or brown are afraid to go outdoors without the apprehension of national personnel racially profiling and arresting them, the point when families keep children home, are too scared to go to the grocery store or physician,” she said. “What we have been preparing for in the Mission is basically a halt the likes of which we have not experienced since the pandemic.”

State Troops Condition

Roughly 300 out of four thousand regional state soldiers stay under federal control under an order from Trump. Roughly several hundred of them had been sent to the Pacific Northwest, where they were remaining in uncertainty in the midst of a legal battle over their deployment.

This period, Newsom said he had summoned the California national guard troops under his authority to manage distribution centers throughout the government shutdown.
